Merry Christmas

Christmas Devotional

First of all MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

For some reason this week has been really warm and humid, like 60 or
65 degrees. it's been weird, we have been sweating like crazy and it's
almost Christmas, and right now the temperature for tomorrow is saying
that it's suppose to be 71 which is super crazy because everybody has
told me that winters in New York are super cold but it's already the
end of December and it 65 haha. Anyway this is what happened this week

Thursday we had to go down to Manhattan because Elder Wilson has to go
to the doctors every 3 months and so this was the month for him to go.
We got to the train station and these 2 guys started talking to us one
was pretty old and one was young, and one asked where we were from and
how everything was going, he seemed to know a lot about missionaries
and so we told him that we were doing good and we are just going to
Manhattan, we got on the train and they both sat next to us and we had
a pretty interesting conversation, this old guy is like a host for
foreign people or anybody and he does this thing called couch surfing
and that is when anybody around the world can go on it and ask to stay
at his house anywhere in the world. And so he had this kid with him
and he was from Russia he came here like 5 days ago because he is gay
and apparently Russians don't like gays or something like that and so
he wants to get a citizenship here and this old guy is helping him to
get it, it actually worked out great because this old guy is also gay
and so he is letting his stay at his house with his husband,
personally I thought it was kinda weird and I felt creeped out to talk
to them but it was all good and they were actually really nice.

After the appointment we went down to Dairy Queen because Elder Wilson
had a gift card for it and it was delicious.

Friday we had a awesome Christmas devotional that was all made up and
run by the missionaries and they sang some awesome songs!! The main
person in charge of it was Eliza Smith she is a sister missionary here
and she was pretty much the one who put it all together and finalized
it and she is the Sister that is from Montana and is best friends with
Whitney. I talked to her for a little bit after because we got food
and she is pretty cool and also she is majored in opera and is super
good at singing.

There is a man in our area his name is Mr. President nobody actually
knows his real name but this past week we have been running into him a
lot, we saw him like 4 different times and this guy is CRAZY! He is so
crazy that I don't even know how to describe him but every time he
comes to church on Wednesday all the kids get scared of he because he
acts super weird. We saw him on the street and he came up to us and he
had a super fat lip and we asked what happened and he said that he was
peeing on the street in public and somebody told him to stop but he
didn't so they just punched him right in the face and ran away, I
kinda felt bad but then he wanted to punch us because he never got to
punch anybody after he got hit, likely the bus was coming and we left,
but this Sunday we were sitting in sacrament meeting and out of know
where he just shows up and just sits next to us and we didn't know
what to do with him so we let him sit down with us and after about 2
minutes he just stood up and started clapping as loud as he can and
started doing all these weird hand gestures and it totally ruined the
spirit but we were able to calm him down and like 5 minutes later he
wanted to go to the bathroom and so he left and the people behind us
were like you guys have to go with him before he breaks or does
something crazy, so we followed him and he came out of the bathroom
completely drenched from head to waste and he wanted to go back into
the chapel but we not unless he goes and dries himself off, so he
dried himself and we went back and after about 10 minutes he couldn't
take it and decided to leave so we had to escort him out to see if he
actually left, and so that was what I did in sacrament... babysat a
crazy guy.

Monday we had a awesome lesson with a sister of member her name is
RocΓo, she didn't read or pray because she said she had a lot of work
(that's pretty much 95% of the people here) but the lesson was good
and I could feel the spirit and we had her brother testify as well,
most of he time she acts like she doesn't care but we could tell that
she really does and we can't wait to meet with her again.

Yesterday we had interviews with president and my interview was really
good, and I left the interview really surprised because how in tune
President Smith is with the spirit because he was just saying
everything that I needed to hear and before I thought he was just
kinda a robot but he was really personal and he knew me really well
even though I have been here for 4 month and he has like 170
missionaries to worry about. I'm really grateful that we have a
awesome Mission President!! Also yesterday we did this thing were like
6 or 8 missionaries go and set up a table on Fordham road (busiest
road in our area) and we just talk to people and show them the new
video and see if they would like to learn more, we didn't have a whole
lot of success mainly because nobody wanted to stop and talk or even
make eye contact but we got a few people who were interested.

Let's see what else oh ya I stepped in poo 3x yesterday it was awful.
Nobody cleans up after their dog here but what can you do it's the
Bronx.

Today we are going with Jay to Manhattan to see all the awesome
Christmas lights.

I hope everybody is having good holiday and Merry Christmas!

I don't have much to say about this week except that I had a good first week with my new companion.
So far I have been blessed with good companions that are hardworking and are fun to be with and make the work exciting to do.
We haven't had very many lessons this week mainly because we dropped a lot of the investigators because they didn't wanna learn and progress or they didn't answer our calls or didn't answer the door when we would go over. Also this last week president sent out a challenge to have 1000 new investigators by the end of this year. So we have been trying to find new investigators and tracting a lot every day. We haven't had much success last week but this week has been really good on Monday we found a guy that is kind of interested and yesterday we found 2 new investigators that are really cool and wanna learn more, so we already hit the standard of excellence for this week because it's only 3 new investigators a week.

Yesterday we had a really good member lesson with one of our investigators (it was awesome because it's really hard to have a member presents because everybody works here 24/7 but we had one last night and it was awesome!) her name is Scarlet and she is really cool, she has been searching for a church and has been going to a lot of churches but non of them seemed right to her. We had a awesome lesson on the restoration and she agreed to read the Book of Mormon and to pray about it. I'm really excited to teach her more because she seems super legit and she is really sincere.

Also I finished reading the Book of Mormon this week and I have started to read the Bible because a lot of people stop us on the streets and ask us about how much we know about the Bible and then start quoting things from it and to be honest I have no idea what the heck they were talking about, so that's what I'm gonna do for studies for the next few months.

I just wanna end by saying that the Book of Mormon is awesome and I wish I would have read it more when I was home, I hope that everybody has a good week and happy holidays.

Transfers and a new comp

Delight and the Sister who taught her

This week has been a pretty interesting.

On Thursday we didn't have much going on because we always have weekly
planning and that takes up to 3 hours if not longer, so we didn't get
out of the apartment until like 4:30 or 5 and so we decided to knock
some doors and then go over to this one guys house, his name is Tom,
we knocked on his door and he let us in we sat down and started to
talk to him. We had a really good lesson on the plan of salvation
because he had some questions about what happens after we die and
stuff like that. At the end of the visit he went on a long rant about
ASIS and stuff like that and so that's when we decided to end he
lesson and leave but before we were about to leave he made us take a
can of beer and he would not let us leave unless we took a can and
when we got to the pad we just dumped it.

Friday I had a day split with the district leader Elder Cheney we
pretty much did looks ups and tracted the whole day and we found 3
investigators and 2 of them looked really solid but toward the end of
the day at about 8 we decided to tract a certain building and so we
got to the 5th floor and we knocked on the first door and nobody
answered for a little while so we knocked again and this guy just
flings open the door starts yelling at us and cussing us out super
hardcore and telling us that he was gonna call the cops if we didn't
leave the building so we pretended like we were gonna leave and just
went 2 stairs down  and knocked on the next door and he heard and ran
down the stairs and kept yelling and cussing us out and also he
threatened us a lot so we decided to leave for good.

On Saturday me and elder Richards went to a baptism of a cool lady
that we tracted into (Delight Stackhouse) and it was a really cool
experience and it was really fun to see her get baptized and to see
how happy she was. And on Sunday she invited us to the English ward so
we can be there to give her the Holy Ghost.

This week we also had transfer calls and it took president forever to
call the zone leaders who then call the district leaders who then call
the missionaries in their district to see what areas they are going
to. So we got our call at midnight and Elder Richards is leaving
Kingsbridge and going to Newburgh which is kind of funny/sad because
thats where he started and that's where he is going back so he has
been on his mission for over a year and only served in 2 areas, I hope
that doesn't happen to me. My new companion is elder Wilson I don't
know him yet because I haven't seen him and still waiting for him to
get here.

So Monday and Tuesday we were just pretty much visiting all the
members in our area so that Elder Richards could take a picture with
them and say goodbye.

Thats all.

Finding New People

Thanksgiving was great! We had 3 dinner appointments that we had
scheduled for sure and we knew there was gonna be a lot of food so we
invited Elders Price and Salceda to join us because they don't have
members in their area that feed them. The first appointment was good I
was pretty hungry so we got there ate food shared a message and left.
The second appointment was also good we didn't eat food because we had
another appointment but Hermana Vega still made us eat something, she
gave us a whole bunch of ice cream cake, after the cake I was pretty
full and had no idea how I was gonna make it in the next appointment.
When we got to this next appointment with Hermana Katya the whole
table was filled with food and to make the story short I felt super
sick and super fat that night because of all the food I have eaten
that day but I'm gonna stop complaining because there are missionaries
like Scottie who don't any food for thanksgiving.

This past week we have been focusing on finding new people to teach
because we need more investigators and also because we went from
having 8 people with a baptismal date to only 1. I'm not sure what we
are doing wrong but we gotta make some changes.

So we have been doing ALOT of tracting and for some reason we haven't
been able to find the right people because nobody wants to hear what
we have to say.

This past Sunday the video "A Savior is Born" came out and we were
really pumped to share it with people at the door thinking that it
would make them more interested but so far no luck, but we will keep
trying our best and I know that we will find somebody who is really
interested and wants to learn more.

On Tuesday we had a really good lesson with Nicole (she is the only
baptism date we have right now) it was on the law of chastity because
she has a less active boyfriend and they just had a baby so in order
for her to be baptized they need to be married. It was my turn to lead
and guide the lesson. I have never had a lessons on the law of
chastity with anybody before so I was thinking to myself that it was
gonna be a little awkward and a little scary but when we got in the
house, we started out with a prayer and as soon as  the prayer was
over I immediately felt super awesome, and I didn't feel scared or
nervous and it was really cool to have a experience like that. I knew
it was the spirit and I felt it all through out the lesson and I'm
pretty sure that this lesson was the best lesson we had so far when I
was in charge of leading it.

This is it for this week sorry that it sounds like I complained a lot
but this is what actually happened and I didn't know what else to
write. I hope that everybody had a great thanksgiving (sounds like
everybody did) and I hope that the rest of this week goes well.

no snow yet but pouring rain

Hello,

I can't think of a very good intro to start out with so I'm just gonna
start writing about the week.

Last Wednesday we bought tickets online to tour the Yankees stadium. I
was super excited to go because I wanted to go on the field and the
locker room and to all those good places but we didn't go to any of
them. The reason we didn't go on the field is because they were making
it into the football field for the pinstripe bowl and I don't know why
we didn't go to the locker rooms.  We only went to the Yankees museum
and that was pretty cool they had a bunch of trophies and rings and
old jersey for famous players. The second place we went to was the
monument park which was also pretty cool and we finished with the
press box. It was kinda fun but defiantly not worth 23 bucks.

We came home did the laundry and bought food and played monopoly for
the rest of the p-day. I wish I knew how to play monopoly before the
mission because it is really fun. For me at least.

Thursday is weekly planning day, so we were sitting and planning and
out of nowhere our phone rings and it was president. We got a little
scared because president doesn't really call us unless we do something
bad or he need us to do something, so we answered the phone and he
just pretty much tells us that he has been thinking of us and wants to
make sure that everything was ok. Everything was good and so we just
continued planning.

That night before we were leavings he apartment to go out and work I
was checking the weather and it said that there was 100% chance of
rain. I don't know what we were thinking but we didn't bring
umbrellas, it didn't rain at first when we went to visit a lady but
then after we came out we were gonna take a bus but we just missed it
and the next bus was like 30 minutes away, we were about a mile away
from our apartment so we decided to walk and as soon as we started to
walk the rain just started to pour super hard. After a few minutes we
were all soaked and we didn't care anymore that it was raining. When
got home there were puddles of water everywhere.

Friday we had a ward party thanksgiving party and that was a lot of
fun. There was a whole bunch of food because pretty much every single
person brought a gigantic plate or a pot of something.

I don't really remember what we did Saturday.

Sunday we had the stake presidency come to our ward and one of them
didn't know how to speak Spanish so he gave his talk in English and
there was another guy translating. It was the first time in a long
time that I actually understood everything what the speaker was saying
to the congregation. It was great!

Monday we had a lesson with a guy named Matt we tracted into him. He
is catholic but is open to other religions and so we taught him the
restoration and the Book of Mormon a he said that he would read a
little bit before we can meet with him next Saturday. The next day he
calls us and he tells us that he read the whole 1st nephi and he wants
to keep reading because he loves it. We were really excited that he
had read that much and we can't wait to meet with him this upcoming
Saturday.

After the lesson we had a lot of time to tract and we tracted into a
lady, she opened the door and told us that she was very Catholic and
that she doesn't want to change religions, but we talked to her for a
little longer and then we were gonna leave but she invited us to come
over to her house on thanksgiving, I was a little surprised but didn't
say anything because it would be a great teaching opportunity and also
our 5th food appointment for thanksgiving.

Tuesday we had a few lesson but after our second to last lesson I
started to have a really bad headache, I thought I could wait it out
and let it pass by but in the middle of our last lesson I honestly
thought I was gonna throw up on the people because I just felt super
sick. The lesson turned out to be really good and nobody got thrown up
on. We came home at around 9:30 and I just went straight to sleep and
this morning I felt great again.

This is all I got, I hope that everybody has a great week and a
wonderful thanksgiving!

Cold weather, tracking, serving, teaching - What a life!

This week has been pretty cold especially when its super windy, the wind blows pretty hard pretty much every day.

In the morning out apartment is always cold so for studies I usually wear a big winter coat over my proselyting clothes and a beanie and sometimes gloves. The good thing about our cold apartment is that it helps me stay awake for the studies.

So this is how the week went, on Friday we had a few hours of tracting and it was a very successful use of our time because we got 5 people to set up a lesson for next day.

Saturday we had a youth come with us to go visit the people that we tracted into the other day, his name is Emerson he is 16 years old and was baptized I think in June or July I don't remember, anyways we only had one person answer the door (people do that here all the time, they would tell us to come back tomorrow and would not even be home) this lady was our last option because she only spoke French and a little bit of English, it was really hard to teach her because she didn't really understand what we were saying and she didnt let us come in so we had to talk to her in the hallway with a lot of distractions and somebody was blasting their music the next door. We gave her a Book of Mormon in English but we are also gonna give her one in Spanish as well.

On Sunday we had 2 out of the 4 people with baptism dates come to church, it was Gabriela and her son Bryan but she only stayed for sacrament only because she said that she had a emergency so she left early but Bryan stayed for all 3 hours.

Later that night we went to help out a family in the ward the Hernandez family to help them carry a chair out of the apartment to their car, they are gonna give it to some lady who lives in Washington Heights.

Monday pretty much nothing was happening until we tracted into this cool investigator his name is Eduardo Polacios, he is just one of these people who the lord has prepared for us to teach because as soon as he opened the door and we started talking to him I just felt really good and felt the spirit, he invited us and pretty much told us his life story how he was drunk he got in a bad car accident and went to jail. After that he decided to change his life and that's when we ran into him and we shared the restoration gave him a Book of Mormon and scheduled a next appointment. I can't wait to meet with him again. We finished the night with a family home evening at the bishops house like always.

Tuesday we had service for old people again we serve them food, we had a lot of people this week because of the holidays and after that we just had 4 lesson 3 with less actives and 1 with a investigator.

This was my week I hope everybody is good and everything is going well.

Chillin in the Bronx

This past week has been pretty different. On Friday we had another
split with the district leaders (we have to split with them every
cycle at least 2 times) and this time Elder Richards went to work with
elder Cheney in his area and I stayed and took over our area with
Elder Perez. Taking over the area was a new experience for me and it
was also pretty hard. We had a great nightly plan for what we were
gonna do the next day, and in the morning we had really good studies
and planned out what we were gonna teach and everything seemed to go
the right way. We were pretty excited because elder perez' area is not
as good as ours and they pretty much never teach more then 2 lesson a
day, so we were pretty pumped to go out and teach like 6 lessons that
day, when we started calling to see if we can come over, the first
appointment cancelled, so we were like ok that's fine we still have 5
more, so we called the next and they also cancelled and you can guess
what happened to the next four appointments, they also cancelled. I
could not believe it because this was literally the only day where
every single appointment has canceled on us and I was in charge of the
area. I didn't really know what to do after that so we made some
backup plans. We decided to do lookups, first the less actives then
the potentials and after that if nobody opened the door we were gonna
tract or street contact. Well to keep the story short we pretty much
tracked the whole day. It was awful and to me it seemed like a whole
day went down the drain, but I did learn how to make backup plans if
everything falls through and I had a lot of practice how to knock
doors.

On Sunday we passed Delight Stackhouse our most golden investigator to
the sister training leaders, she was so awesome! She was a little sad
because we weren't gonna teach her anymore and she told us that we
would always have a special place in her heart because we were the
first to find and introduce the gospel to her, but at the same time
she was really happy and excited to take this new step in her life. I
think she is being baptized on December 12th.

Yesterday was a great day because we had a zone conference, and it was
awesome! My mission president is soooo cool and everytime that we have
these conferences with him I feel reenergized and just ready to go out
and do the work, I don't know how he does it but it's so motivational
and so uplifting that I don't even know how to decried it. Also we got
to see a new video that the church came out with for Christmas and it
actually doesn't come out until November 29th but we got to see it
early and it is so cool, I can't wait until it comes out so I can show
it to people.

Also I forgot to say this before but right now I'm sitting at the
church writing this email and the house of Edgar Allan Poe is right
across the street, it's kinda random but it's pretty cool. Thats
pretty much it.

Halloween Week

Another week has past by and it was a really good one. On Friday we had a lot of time to go street contacting and door knocking, we didn't have much success but we did run into a lady who was pretty interested but we haven't been able to contact her yet. After we talked to this lady we went down to the bus stop to catch the bus because we were gonna go back home but we wanted to take a picture before we leave and we saw this one guy standing there and we asked him if he could take it. After I asked if he would like a card with a picture of Jesus Christ and he said yes and we started to talk to him about church and that kind of stuff. He has never heard of Mormons before except from South Park and we explained to him what our church does and believes and he was really interested. He has been trying to change his life around and he has been praying for help, but he said it was really hard for him to do it by himself. We talked to him about the plan of salvation and also gave him the Book of Mormon and he was super excited. We talked with him for about 25 mins and then he left. He was really happy that we ran into him and decided to talk to him and he kept saying how he was so happy that he could not stop smiling. It was really cool to see how the lord prepares people to hear the gospel and this was one of these times.

On Saturday was Halloween and we pretty much didn't get anything done because we didn't have any appointments and nobody answered any doors because they were gone or they just didn't want to listen. We also had a curfew at 6:30 as well so that limited our time to do the work, but we saw a lot of cool costumes.

Sunday was great we had 2 investigators come to church Morena and her son Nathaniel. Morena wanted to leave after Sunday school but Nathaniel wanted to stay and so he convinced her to stay the last hour and also we made a deal that if they came to church this week that me and elder Richards would have to go to their 7th day Adventist church this Saturday. I'm pretty excited to go and see how other churches are like.

Also on Sunday we had a really cool lesson with this one lady he name is Delight and she is what you call a golden investigator. I really like her because she is really nice and even thought we only had one lesson with her she has read so much in the Book of Mormon. I don't really know how to describe her except that she has been the best investigator that I had so far, but the bad part is that she only speaks English and so we would have to give her up to the English sister but that's still ok because thats another soul coming into Christ.

On Tuesday we had a Lesson with the Aguilar family and the thing they need to do is to go to the temple and be sealed as a family because the Mother has a disease called muscular dystrophy and she is slowly dying and they need to go to the temple soon but she has been really scared because she can't see or walk very well so we brought the ward family history person and she gave a really good lesson, she went to town about temples and family history and how important the temples are in our lives, because we have temples we can be together for ever with our families.

Today me and elder Richards and elder price and elder salceda went to the city to just go and explore and also me and elder Richards did some initiatory, it was very nice. It really cool to walk down the noisy streets and then enter the temple and as soon as the doors close its nice and peaceful and quiet.

That's it for this week.

1st cycle complete✔️

For the past couple of Sunday's me and Elder Richards spent our time
In the primary because he is good at playing the piano and so the
primary people asked him to play the piano for the kids for the
primary program. So this past Sunday we had the primary program in our
ward. It was great! I got to sit on the stand with them while they
sang, and I also got a free yellow bow tie, all the boys had to wear
bow ties and the girls wore some kind of a yellow scarf or something.
While I was sitting with the kids the primary instructors told me to
keep an eye on them, but I didn't really have to do anything because
they were awesome and really reverent.

After the primary program ended the fun did not stop because during
the 2nd and 3rd hours the primary teachers just brought a bunch of
food for everybody and we just sat there and ate food and played with
the kids for about 2 hours it was awesome.

We also got our transfers calls this week and not that many people got
transferred this cycle, we only had 4 people that are leavings this
cycle,  2 sisters and 1 elder are getting transferred and 1 elder is
leaving home. Nobody is changing in my pad were all staying here for
at least another cycle, but this is Elder Richards' 5th cycle in this
area so he will probably leave after this cycle.

On Monday we went to another part of our area, we call it "outer
darkness" but it's really called Wakefield. The reason we call it
outer darkness is because in the 6 weeks that I have been here this
was only my second time in that area and there aren't very many
Spanish speakers there. Anyway we had a really good day in outer
darkness and contacted a lot of people and I think we got 2 or 3 new
investigators and theY seemed really interested.

Recently we have been sharing the lesson on the Book of Mormon a lot
and what we would do for that is read the first and the last two
paragraph of the introduction and talk about it. It's amazing to me
how some people reject it without even trying to give it a chance and
its also amazing how the Book of Mormon can change somebody so much.
In my first cycle here I have been reading it a lot and right now I'm
in Alma 24 and I have come to love reading the Book of Mormon so much
and my testimony of the Book of Mormon has grown a lot! I'm grateful
to have the Book of Mormon in my life and I know that it's true.

This week was great! I had my first adult investigator come to church
her name is Morena and I was really happy to see her there. After the
sacrament meeting was over I wanted to talk to her to see if she liked
it but as soon it was over she booked it out the door. This was my
second investigator that came to church overall, i don't know if I
have written about Brian before but he is this awesome 12 year old who
really like the church and he reads the Book of Mormon a lot. We had a
meeting with him and his mom this week and also his older brother he's
15 and doesn't wanna do anything with the church and doesn't even
believe in God so it's really hard to work with him, but his mom
agreed to read and to pray about the Book of Mormon again and she said
that when she knows that it's true she will get baptized, so that was
pretty awesome.

This past week has been the coldest of my mission, Its also really
cold in our apartment because the super does not turn on the heater
and we are not allowed to buy a heater or anything like that, but
yesterday we actually had really good whether and today seems like
it's also gonna be good.

This week we also had a really cool fiesta at the church it was called
Noche de Nacionaledades (The night of nations) and many investigators
came to it but they were not our even though a lot of our
investigators did say that they would come. So the party was suppose
to start at 7 and many nonmember came there at 7 but since the ward
didn't start setting up until 7 we didn't actually start it until 8 or
815 so many of the nonmember got sick of just sitting there so they
started to leave. The party was really fun they had a bunch of dances
from different Spanish countries and they also had a lot of good food,
we couldn't stay for very long though and had to go to the apartment
ant 9.

Yesterday I went on a split with elder Perez he's pretty cool but he
is also new to the mission, this cycle is only his 2nd cycle and he
was in charge of his area so we got lost a couple of time but it was
still a fun and a good experience and I learned a lot what to do and
what not to do. I think this is all I can't remember anything else but
I love you all and have a good week.
